On June 22, 1965, the Tennessee Board of Education approved sites for three community colleges. Plans ensured with a groundbreaking ceremony for Tennessee's first community college in Columbia, Tennessee, held on October 20, 1965. On March 15, 1967, President Lyndon Johnson joined his wife Lady Bird as she dedicated the college, saying "forever to the service of the people and to the progress of our nation".

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.
