In the early 1920s, African Americans Joseph Worley, Andrew Polk, and Finn Wray, along with the community, city and county governments secured funds to build the “Mt. Pleasant Colored School.” A Rosenwald facility, it was later named in honor of Dr. C. Y. Clarke who played a vital role in its establishment. In 1962, the school's name was changed to Clarke Elementary and High School, and its last class to graduate was in 1969. The school closed due to racial desegregation.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
