Born on May 29, 1831, in Montgomery County, Joseph Buckner Killebrew was an ardent advocate for extending public education, encouraging immigration to the South, developing natural resources for industrialization and improving agriculture, all of which were New South principles. A prolific writer and public servant, in 1874 he published Resources of Tennessee. Tennessee's first Commissioner of Agriculture, Killebrew served in this position from 1875 to 1880. He and his wife Mary Catherine Wimberly Killebrew lived on this farm. Only weeks after her death, Killebrew died in March of 1906. They, along with numerous relatives, are buried in the adjacent cemetery.
