One hundred yards north is the grave of Thomas Kilgore, Revolutionary War veteran from North Carolina, close friend of James Robertson, and one of the earliest settlers of this area. Kilgore first visited here at age 62 in 1778 and returned in 1779 to erect an important early stockaded fort, "Kilgore's Station", which became a point of gathering and departure for the settlers of this part of Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
