Four tenths of a mile south of this marker at the Louisville & Nashville Railroad bridge over Mansker's Creek, a Union force under Lt. J. H. Johnson with sixty infantry from the 50th Indiana Volunteers were attacked by Confederate Col. J. H. Morgan's 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. Two Union soldiers were killed, and fifty-two were captured. The bridge was burned. The fighting moved west to Edgefield Junction, where a larger fight occurred. The bridge would be rebuilt and closely guarded by the Union Army to maintain the vital connection with Nashville.
