General Griffith Rutherford, surveyor, North Carolina legislator, commander of Revolutionary War forces of Western North Carolina, and President of the Legislative Council of the Southwest Territory from 1794 to statehood, lived 3 miles south of here from 1792 to his death in 1805. Counties in North Carolina and Tennessee are named for him. His unmarked grave is said to be in Shiloh Graveyard 300 yards north.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
