This station was built in 1790 near Bledsoe Creek by Joseph Ziegler to protect early settlers. In 1791, it was attacked by a war party of Creek, Cherokee, and Chickamauga Indians, killing ten persons and taking eighteen prisoners. A forced march was made to Chattanooga being unsuccessfully pursued by General James Winchester and local militia. All prisoners were later ransomed by General James White, founder of Knoxville, and brother of a captive, Sarah White Wilson.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
