This antebellum mansion, begun about 1824 by Dr. James Maney, is located 1 1/4 miles N. on land acquired by Col. Hardy Murfree in 1798. Subsequently enlarged, it is an excellent example of architectural transition from frontier dwelling to plantation home to town house. Famed as host to many notable of the state and nation, it was here on July 13, 1862, that Nathan B. Forrest received the surrender of Federal forces occupying Murfreesboro.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
