The house of his birth, Feb. 18, 1796, was on this site. Graduate of Nashville's Cumberland College, 1814, he was a state senator in 1817 and Member of Congress, 1827 to 1841, when appointed Secretary of War. He was nominated for the Presidency by the Constitutional Union Party in 1860. He died at Bear Spring, Sept. 10, 1869, and is buried in Nashville.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
