Born 1803, in Salem, Massachusetts, and a sea captain at 21, William Driver retired in 1837. He came here with his three children and the flag given him by the girls of Salem. He nicknamed the flag “Old Glory”, the first known use of the term. This flag was flown from the State Capitol when Federal troops took Nashville in 1862. Capt. Driver died in 1886.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
