John Nash Read, a Revolutionary War patriot, moved to Rutherford County from Virginia in 1806. In 1810, he purchased 600 acres on the West Fork of Stones River. From the wilderness, his enslaved persons felled trees, hewed logs and built a house of worship on the west side of the river. He named the meetinghonse, Enon. In 1822, Read deeded two acres of his land, known as Templeton Grove, to this congregation. Enon Meeting House of the Baptist faith was destroyed during the Civil War.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
