In 1800, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church was organized on this site by settlers from North Carolina under the leadership of Pastor Marimon Landrum. It was one of the original churches in the county. The original log building with 12 corners for the 12 apostles, served for 67 years and was replaced by a frame structure. In 1832, the congregation split between Missionary and Primitive Baptist. Both worshipped here until the current auditorium was built in 1904. The cemetery contains the graves of many early settlers including the founding pastor and numerous Civil War veterans.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
