The Army of Mississippi passed here. Forrest's Cavalry Brigade, reporting Sept. 3, moved out to screen the left flank. Here, Sept. 5, Bragg advised his army of Kirby Smith's victory at Richmond, Ky., Aug. 30. At Milledgeville, 10 mi. N. Bragg, with Polk's Right Wing, turned west to pass through Carthage. Hardee's left Wing, screened by Wheeler's Cavalry Brigade, moved north through Gainesboro. The columns reunited at Tompkinsville, Ky.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
