Bryan College was named to honor William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925), American statesman, orator, three-time democratic presidential candidate, former secretary of state, and spokesman for religious orthodoxy in the modernist-fundamentalist controversy, who died here five days after the Scopes Evolution Trial of 1925, in which he assisted the prosecution. Opened in 1930, Bryan is a non-sectarian, independent liberal arts college committed to Biblical Christianity.
