Situated at the intersection of Hamilton, Bradley, and Meigs counties, the village is traditionally considered to be named for Cherokee leader George Fields, who owned a large two-story home and operated a trading post at the corner of Georgetown and Francisco Roads in the early 1800s. The first post office was established on March 9, 1837, as "Limestone" and was changed to "Georgetown" in 1867. Continued: Since then, the post office has been in four different counties, including James County, which dissolved in 1919. The earliest school of record in Georgetown was the Georgetown Academy of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church started in 1847.
