This church was founded in 1802. In its cemetery are buried early settlers and Revolutionary veterans, including Col. John Sawyers, William Roberts, Samuel Crawford and Simon Harris. The latter, a former fifer in the 2nd Virginia Regiment at the age of 12, came here in 1817, and built a log house, still standing, about 1/2 mile north of the church.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
