For more than 200 years the Black Sulfur Spring has been a landmark location in Blount County. The spring and 215 acres was bought from David Delzell in 1834 to become one of three primary mineral springs for Daniel Foute's 6,500 acre Montvale Springs Hotel and Spa (l832-1933) three miles away. For a century the hotel and springs hosted guests from all over the world. The vast mountainous property reached to parts of Cades Cove. Foute hired members of the Cherokee Nation to build roads and trails to Cades Cove and beyond to serve the hotel.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
