In 1919 landowner Jeremiah Smith allowed airplanes to land on his farm. Consequently, the Jellico Aero Corporation was organized and incorporated in 1920, making it the area's first commercial airport. In 1933 the city of Jellico brought the land from Smith for $3400 and began work on the land for property to be used exclusively as an airport. With the rise of coal mining in the 1940s, the airport was sold to the Saxton Coal Company on November 4, 1943 for a small fraction of its worth.
