Built in 1924 with financial assistance from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, established by Sears Roebuck CEO Julius Rosenwald, the community worked with the philanthropic organization to provide a place where African American children could receive a proper education. In 1930 officials named the school for Dudley S. Tanner, a Rosenwald agent who worked to promote its establishment. Tanner School closed in 1966 due to desegregation. It later served as home to various community groups. In 2011, a tornado damaged the building forcing I to close. Thanks to the efforts of local citizens, it is again a center of activity.
