Washington County: Established in 1777: named in honor of George Washington Colonel in the Colonial Army; Commander-in Chief of the Revolutionary Army and first resident of the United States of America. Greene County: Established 1783: named in honor of Nathanael Greene. Major General in the Revolutionary Army. After fighting at Trenton, then Brandywine & Germantown, and serving at Valley Forge, he became Quartermaster General of the Army. He later took command of the Army in the South, where his brilliant handling helped to bring about the end of the War.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.
