Mt. Zion School

Front: This was the original location of Mt. Zion School, a public school for African Americans established by Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Church members acquired this site in 1873 and opened Mt. Zion School by 1876. At that time the school was taught by J.C. Noisette. It was housed in a wooden two-room building located on a ¼-acre lot on the northwest side of the church property. Reverse: Mt. Zion School was supported primarily by members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. In 1924 school trustees donated a 3-acre lot on Brattonsville Road to McConnellsville School District No. 13. A new three-teacher school was built at that site with funding from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, local Black residents, and the school district. The old school at this site was later removed.
