Battle of Stallings' Plantation

Front: In 1768 John Stallings purchased 470 acres on Millican’s Branch on Fishing Creek. During the American Revolution, Stallings (known locally as “Stallions”) remained loyal to the British, but his wife, Sarah Love Stallings, was a Patriot. Such family divisions were common during the Revolution. Reverse: In the late summer of 1780, Patriots and Loyalists met in a brief battle at Stallings’ Plantation. Stallings’ brother-in-law, Cpt. Andrew Love, and Col. Thomas Brandon led 50 Patriot militiamen against 35 Loyalists camped at Stallings’ home. Although the Loyalists were defeated, Sarah Stallings was accidentally killed.
