Cane Creek Town

Front: This section of Oconee County was Cherokee land until 1777. Located north of here on the banks of Cane Creek was a small Cherokee Lower Town often referred to as Cane Creek Town. One 19th century account states its original Cherokee name was “Cananaska.” The town was destroyed by Patriot forces during the American Revolution. Cherokees later returned and lived there until the 1790s. Reverse: Cananaska is believed to have been one of the last-occupied Lower Towns in Pendleton District. After the Revolutionary War, the town was part of an 1,100-ac. tract of bounty land awarded to Maj. Gen. William Moultrie that later inspired the name of the nearby “Bounty Land” community. In 1970, the town site and adjacent section of Cane Creek were submerged beneath the waters of Lake Keowee.
