Chauga Town

Chauga, one of the Cherokee “Lower Towns” in what is now S.C., was near the headwaters of the Chauga River. It, like many other Lower Towns, was abandoned and resettled several times and likely abandoned before the Revolution. In 1797 U.S. Indian agent Benjamin Hawkins described the town site as in “a healthy position and neighbourhood.... convenient for a trading establishment.”
