Pine Grove A.M.E. Church

Front: Tradition holds that Pine Grove African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church organized in 1872 and first worshipped under a brush arbor. Within a few years members built their first house of worship. In 1897 the church took ownership of 2 1/2 acres of land at this site. The sanctuary on the north side of the property, later a fellowship hall, was built around that time. Reverse: The land for the church was donated by member Willis Steward. Soon after organizing, Pine Grove joined the A.M.E. Church’s Columbia District. Congregants also founded Pine Grove public school for African Americans. An education wing was added to the church in 1961 and expanded in 1982. In 2001 worship services moved into a new sanctuary built just sought of the c.1897 building.
