Lexington Graded and High School

Front: Lexington Graded and High School opened at this site in 1912. The two-story brick building was designed by architect L.D. Preacher and was influenced by the Gothic and Classical movements. Additions were built in 1924 and 1929. The graded school (grades 1-6) primarily served families living in the town of Lexington. The high school (grades 7-10) was free to residents from throughout Lexington Co. Reverse: In 1957, this site became Lexington Elementary School. Originally a white school, it first admitted African American students in 1967. The campus here closed in 1985 after a new elementary school was built to the north. Lexington Elementary enrolled children in grades K-4 during its final years at this site. The 1912 and 1924 buildings were demolished in 1988. The rest of the campus was torn down in 2020.
