Sox Homestead and Cemetery

Front: David Mathias Sox (1823-1910) once owned approximately 350 acres here, where he lived with his wife, Caroline Spires Sox, and their nine children. Sox enlisted in the 20th S.C. Infantry and fought in the Civil War. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Oct. 1864. Sox survived and returned to farm the land here, where he grew corn, wheat, and potatoes. Reverse: The pine forests that proliferated in the sandy soils here gave rise to a local turnpentine industry, and Sox also worked as a cooper, producing barrels to haul crude gum to local distilleries. Remaining is a timber-framed homestead built by Danel Sox, thought it has been brick veneered and modernized. The family cemetery, where David and Caroline are buried, sits in the woods just off the road.
