Front: This is the site of Macedonia School, an African American public school founded by Macedonia Baptist Church. The congregation organized in the 1870s and acquired this site in 1884 for “educational and religious purposes.” Around 20 elementary-age students attended the school each day in the mid-1930s. At that time, it operated for a term of 4-5 months and had one teacher. Reverse: For much of its history, Macedonia was part of Hampton County School District No. 17 (Rice). It closed after the 1951-52 school term as part of consolidation. In its final year, Macedonia had 15 students and was the smallest school in Hampton County. It was last housed in a concrete block building that still stands and was likely built before World War II.
