Hampton-Pinckney Neighborhood

Front: The Hampton-Pinckney neighborhood is one of the oldest intact collections of residential buildings in Greenville. Many homes here date to the area’s original development in the 1890s to 1910s. They reflect the influence of several styles of architecture, especially Queen Anne and Craftsman. Pinckney St. and Hampton Ave. form the neighborhood’s core, with boundaries along Pinckney and Lloyd Sts. and Butler and Asbury Aves. Reverse: Previously Highland Ave., Hampton Ave. assumed its current name upon the 1902 death of Gov. Wade Hampton III. Pinckney St. was named for and originally spelled the same as William Pinkney McBee (d.1860), who lived where the street was later laid. In the 1970s residents organized to rehabilitate neighborhood homes that had deteriorated as families moved away after WWII. The name “Hampton-Pinckney” was coined amid those efforts.
