First Presbyterian Church Greenville

Front: This church was founded in 1848 by sixteen members. On this corner, a wooden sanctuary was built in 1851 on land donated by Vardry McBee. In 1883 church growth prompted construction of a larger, brick Gothic Revival building. Later stuccoed, the 1883 sanctuary was largely demolished and rebuilt in 1986-87. In 1893 the church helped organize Chicora College, a women’s institution located in Greenville until 1915. Reverse: In 1924, Boy Scout Troop 11 was established by the church. Since the 1870s the church helped found a number of Presbyterian churches in the Upstate. By the early 1920s, the congregation exceeded 1,000. A large Sunday School wing was added in 1929. Later expansions accommodated growing membership and provided facilities for education, special events, music, arts, and ministry.
