Chapman Grove School

Front: This was the site of Chapman Grove School, est. 1921 by J.H. “Prof.” Chapman and other Black residents of lower Greenville County. The school eventually enrolled grades 1-12 with classes held in separate elementary and high school buildings. It served local African American students and others from neighboring counties. In 1930-31 a brick teacherage was built with support from the Rosenwald Fund. Reverse: Chapman Grove School specialized in agricultural training and provided farming and home demonstration programs for children as well as adults. The campus included a poultry house, cannery, and sweet potato house availabile to local farmers and funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Chapman Grove School closed in 1954 as part of the consolidation of county schools.
