Belin Memorial United Methodist Church

Front: Belin Memorial United Methodist Church (U.M.C.) organized in 1925. The first church building was a frame chapel previously used on a local plantation. It was relocated to this site and dedicated in 1926. The Rev. William T. Bedenbaugh was Belin’s first minister. The current church was built in 1992. The original chapel was later donated to Joseph B. Bethea U.M.C. and moved to that congregation’s site in Myrtle Beach. Reverse: Belin Memorial was named it in honor of the Rev. James L. Belin (1788-1856), one of the first Methodist preachers in this area. He helped found the Waccamaw Neck Mission in 1836 and worked primarily among local enslaved people. He willed most of this property to the Methodist Church, including his Cedar Hill Plantation where Belin Memorial was founded. His nearby home, later relocated, served as a parsonage until the 1960s.
