Front: This is the original site of Green’s Funeral Home, a prominent African American-owned business in mid-20th century Lake City. It was opened in 1931 by Luther M. Green (1908-1986), a native of Georgetown Co. who worked as an undertaker and barber. Green secured ownership of the property in 1938 from John H. Pendergrass, a local Black farmer. Green’s also provided ambulance services to local residents in need of medical treatment. Reverse: Luther Green became a local civil rights leader and was an active member of the S.C. Progressive Democratic Party in the 1940s. Around 1950 the funeral home moved to a new facility near S. Church and Knight Sts. Green and other family members continued to run the business for several more decades. The original c.1931 wood frame funeral home still stands at this site along with a former ambulance shed.
