Mount Zion Baptist Church

Front: Mount Zion Baptist Church was founded in 1828. In that year church trustees acquired three acres of land at this site where they built their first house of worship. Members also received permission to make use of an adjacent spring. Mount Zion joined the Edgefield Baptist Association in 1829. The church's founding minister was Rev. Peter Galloway of Barnwell District. Reverse: The church was an important institution in what became known as the Mount Zion section of Edgefield County. In 1910 the congregation had ninety-nine members. The first church was a small wooden building. It was torn down and replaced in 1916 with another frame building. Still extant, this second church was built 200 ft. W of the original by contractor and Mount Zion member W.A. Pardue.
