St. George Rosenwald School

Front: This wood frame building dates to 1925-26 and was originally a public school for Black residents of St. George and other parts of Dorchester County. At that time it was known as St. George Colored School or Greenleaf School. It was one of two county schools built with support from the Julius Rosenwald Fund and is the only one that still stands. The design of the school follows one of the Fund’s six-teacher plans. Reverse: The building was expanded several times, including in 1935 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). It was renamed Williams Memorial School in the 1940s. In 1954 the school moved ½ mi. S to a campus built through the state equalization program. The school enrolled more than 800 students in grades 1-12 during its last year at this site. After falling into disrepair, the Rosenwald building underwent a major restoration c.2023.
