Summerville High School

Front: The 2-story brick building SW of here was built in 1924-25 to house Summerville High School (SHS). The school originally included the north hall and central auditorium, with the west and east wings being added later. In 1969-70, SHS moved to a new campus. In 1972, this site became Rollings Elementary and, later, Rollings Middle School of the Arts, named for former SHS teacher and principal Richmond H. Rollings. Reverse: Born in Greenwood, S.C., John McKissick attended Presbyterian College before beginning his coaching career in Clarkson, N.C. In 1952, he became head coach of the SHS “Green Wave” football team. In 1987, SHS home field was named in his honor. In 1993, he became the winningest coach in the history of American football. By the time of his 2014 retirement, he won 10 state championships and amassed a 621-155-13 record.
