Chesterfield Baptist Church

Front: Chesterfield Baptist Church organized in 1877. Members first met at another Main St. site in a house owned by founding minister Rev. Archibald B. Hursey. They worshipped there until 1883 when they began meeting at the old Methodist church at Page and Main Sts. The Chesterfield Baptist congregation took ownership of the property in 1886 and built a new wood frame church that was dedicated in 1893. Reverse: Chesterfield Baptist Church was originally a member of the Welsh Neck Baptist Association and became part of the Chesterfield Baptist Association in the 1890s. In 1928 the church moved into the brick Classical Revival building that still stands at this site. In 1955 an education wing was added. The church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as part of the East Main Street Historic District.
