Skirmish at Grimball's Plantation

Front: On June 10, 1862 a Civil War skirmish occurred near this site. Union forces had recently set up camp at Thomas Grimball’s plantation on the Stono River. On the morning of June 10, Confederate soldiers organized near the Presbyterian church (1 mi. NE). After an artillery barrage on Union positions, regiments from Ga. and La. advanced through thick woods toward the plantation that afternoon. Reverse: Covered by gunboat fire from the river, Union regiments from Pa. and N.Y. met the Confederates in this area and repulsed the attack. More than sixty Confederate and sixteen Union casualties resulted. The engagement preceded the Battle of Secessionville on June 16, when Confederate soliders rebuffed a Union attack and forced their evacuation from James Island.
