Front: James F. Byrnes, American statesman, was born in a house on nearby King Street and grew up in this neighborhood. He attended St. Patrick's parochial school and Bennett public school, both on St. Philip Street. He died April 9, 1972 and is buried in Trinity Cathedral churchyard, in Columbia, South Carolina. Reverse: From humble beginnings, James F. Byrnes, born and brought up in this neighborhood, rose to eminence and handled affairs of worldwide importance. He served in both houses of Congress and as an associate justice of the U. S. Supreme Court. He was director of War Mobilization in World War II, Secretary of State and Governor of South Carolina.
