Skirmish at Wells's Plantation

Front: During the night of Aug. 24, 1781, a Revolutionary War skirmish took place at Wells’s Plantation on Bull Head, a portion of Northampton Creek to the northwest. Earlier in the day, Patriot militia and Continental cavalry led by Capt. Bennett had plundered Loyalist plantations on Daniel Island 15 mi. SW. Reverse: Led by Capt. McNeil, British regulars and Loyalist militia posted 10 mi. S at Wappetaw Church moved on the Patriots, approaching them that night at Wells’s Plantation. The brief skirmish resulted in several Patriot casualties including one death. Most escaped after a barking dog alerted them to the arrival of the British.
