Berkeley County Hospital

Front: Around 1930, Anne Sinkler Fishburne and Dr. Kershaw Fishburne led a campaign by the Berkeley Tuberculosis Association to open a local tuberculosis sanatorium. The effort later broadened and resulted in Berkeley County Hospital, a roughly 60-bed general hospital with a dedicated tuberculosis wing. The brick Colonial Revival facility opened at this site in 1933 and was designed by Va. architects Johnson & Brannan. Reverse: Most of the hospital’s over $125,000 cost was paid by Hugh and Mary Robertson, wealthy northerners who wintered in Berkeley County. Additional support came from the Duke Endowment and individual donations. Upon opening, the hospital mainly served local white residents with a portion of beds reserved for African American patients. It closed in 1975. The campus was later repurposed as the county health department.
