Keith School

Front: This was the site of a public school for African Americna families in this section of lower Berkeley Co. It was housed in a one-room building likely built in the 1920s by the descendants of local freedpeople. By the 1930s it was part of Wando School District and known as Keith School. It was previously called Logan School. It had two teachers and around 70 students in grades 1-6. Reverse: Local children attended Keith School until 1955. By its final years, the school had grown to four teachers and approx. 100 pupils. It was one of several Black schools to be replaced by Cainhoy Elementary (8 mi. N). In 1971, the Keith School property was deeded to the Wando Community Center. The original school was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Portions of its foundation remain by the road.
