Carteret Street Methodist Church

Front: Methodism in Beaufort Co. dates to the 1730s when denomination founder Rev. John Wesley visited the area. Methodist preachers in antebellum Beaufort worked primarily among local enslaved people. In c.1882, white residents formed a union church at this site used by members of several Christian denominations. Local Methodists acquired the property in 1884 and here organized Carteret Street Methodist Church. Reverse: Carteret Street Methodist Church’s first assigned pastor was Rev. Henry M. Mood. The first parsonage was donated to the church in 1892. Early members worshipped in the old wood frame union church until it was removed from the site in 1921. Members obtained nearby lots to enlarge the site and had plans drawn for a larger brick church. Built the next year, it first hosted services in Dec. 1922 and stands today.
