Bambery County Courthouse

Front: Bamberg County, named for Gen. Francis Marion Bamberg, was formed in 1897. One of the first projects undertaken was the construction of a new courthouse and jail. The construction was financed by the City of Bamberg in return for the county seat being located here. Designed by architect L.F. Goodrich, the courthouse is built of red brick with solid masonry walls that measture two feet thick. Reverse: The original location of the courthouse was on the western side of North Main St. When Hwy. 301 was relocated, however, it ran directly through the courthouse grounds. It was ultimately decided to move the massive building across the highway. Work began in 1950 and the total cost of moving the building 300 feet was $25,000. At that time the building was also remodeled, giving it a more modern appearance.
