Doe Pond Baptist Church

Front: Tradition holds that Doe Pond Baptist Church was organized by formerly enslaved people in the years after the Civil War. By the 1880s the congregation had around 100 members. At that time it was part of the Bethlehem Baptist Association. Church founders likely took the name “Doe Pond” from a small body of water located near their original worship site 2 mi. SW. Reverse: At the original site, members built a church and established a cemetery. Doe Pond’s early laypeople as well as ministers were mostly from local farming families. The congregation acquired this site in 1958 and subsequently built a new church using timbers from the old one. The c.1958 church has been renovated and expanded over the years but still stands.
