COROSSOL In November 1693, this French military vessel armed with twenty cannons set sail from Québec City, escorting six ships heading to France. Battered by a storm, Corossol sought shelter in the Baie des Sept Îles, where it struck a shoal and sank, scattering its cargo. Few of the passengers and crew members aboard the vessel reached the safety of shore. Most perished. As an archaeological site, the shipwreck offers a rich variety of objects, some of which remain underwater. The artifacts from this French King’s vessel provide a unique insight into the naval strategy of 17th-century New France.
