Built by l'Association Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal and opened on 24 June 1893, this centre of theatre, political action and education has played a critical role in the promotion of French language and culture in North America. Its theatre, which seated over 1400, was also the centre of Yiddish performance in Canada between 1915 and 1957. An eclectic design by the firm of Perrault, Mesnard and Venne, this building was restored in 1993 and, since 1971, has been occupied by the National Theatre School of Canada.
