BATTLE OF DUCK LAKE On March 26, 1885, the first battle of the North-West Resistance took place on what is now called Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation. A week prior, a Provisional Government led by Louis Riel formed to protect Métis land and rights against Canadian expansion. At Duck Lake, Métis forces under Gabriel Dumont intercepted North-West Mounted Police and Prince Albert Volunteers under Superintendent Leif Crozier. Both sides suffered casualties. The presence of Willow Cree and the death of Chief Beardy’s headman Assiwiyin led to the misconception that many First Nations joined the Resistance. This battle was an important Métis victory.
