NOTRE-DAME BASILICA CATHEDRAL Initially built in 1647, this church is closely associated with the history of New France. It became the first parish church of the colony in 1664 and was promoted to the rank of cathedral by Msgr. de Laval in 1674. Enlarged and modified by generations of talented architects and artists, it became a model for church architecture and interior decoration in Quebec. Destroyed during the Siege of Québec in 1759, it was rebuilt on its foundations in 1766-1771. Its impressive neoclassical facade was added in 1843–1844. After being ravaged by a fire in 1922, Notre-Dame was largely restored to its monumental 19th-century appearance.
