The American Flag (Rock Mary)

Caddo County · on top of Rock Mary, southwest of Hinton

On May 23, 1849, the flag of the United States was unfurled atop the Rock Mary by Lieutenants M. P. Harrison and J. H. Simpson. The officers were part of a military detachment escorting emigrants westward. They named the rock for emigrant Mary Conway, establishing a landmark for thousands of settlers moving westward.
